The funny thing about New Year's resolutions is that nobody really keeps them. Maybe next year I will resolve to not write a post each week.
Anyway, looks like Triple J is doing another top 100. This time it is the top 100 of the last 20 years. This was really tough to come up with an actual list for, because you only get 20 nominations. I ended up voting for a few tracks which I didn't think were the actual best, but the band deserves recognition, and there are more popular songs.
Here's my picks:
First, the obvious. I think these tracks are the very best of the last 20 years:
The Ergs! - Warm + Sharp
The Queers - Punk Rock Girls
The Weakerthans - The Reasons
The flaming lips - Yoshimi battles the pink robots pt.1
Mono - Karelia(Opus 2)
Peter, bjorn and John - Young Folks
The postal Service - Such Great Heights
The last two are a little off pace, but I genuinely believe they are fantastic examples of song writing. The two songs are immensely popular, well known, and original. I know Postal Service get some flack for being so hip, and they are, but Such Great Heights absolutely sums up that period in indie rock.
The Mono track I may be the only person to vote for but that band deserves way more recognition outside of the postrock community (and Japan) than it ever got.
Next, concession votes:
Gogol Bordello - Through the roof 'n' underground
Puscifer - Sour Grapes
Radiohead - Karma Police
Mr. T Experience - My Stupid Life
Neutral Milk Hotel - In an aeroplane over the sea
Modest Mouse - Float On
Mogwai - I am no Batman
These bands may all have better tracks, but I put a vote in for the tracks that have the most chance of making it. If I had a bit more freedom it would be:
Gogol Bordello - 60 Revolutions
Puscifer - Queen B
Radiohead - 15step
Mr. T Experience - I believe in you
Neutral Milk Hotel - two headed boy
Modest Mouse - Bukowski
Mogwai - Acid Food
Then there's the hits that you cannot -not- vote for honestly
AFI - Totalimmortal
Nine Inch Nails - Hurt
No Doubt - Don't Speak
Pavement - Cut your hair
The Unicorns - I Was Born (a Unicorn)
Finally, my cheating vote:
Wugazi - Sleep Rules everything around me
And that's it. You have 7 hours if you want to vote.
