So remember that moment in life when you realised you were too old to ever become a wunderkind. Unless I do something like chair a company or win a Nobel prize in the next 2-3 years then this is it. My trigger being King Krule.
Look at this kid, playing in his parent's garage, probably doing Green Day covers right?
Nope, this kid is King Krule, he's 19 and that's him at a BBC1 session. He's 19, and he has successfully written one of my favourite albums of the last few years. It's just absolutely mindblowing how good this album is. It sounds like a 3rd or 4th album, not a debut. At any age, this album would be fantastic.
He's taken a page out of the Ian Curtis/Rick Astley book and has a voice that absolutely blows you out of the water. When I heard "Easy Easy" the first time and googled him up, it took a lot of research to confirm that, yes, this kid is producing that voice.
Lots of very cool bass work, lyrics are fantastic and he has a smooth rhythm to his voice. He's sort of just talking over the music at just the right pace. It all feels so effortless, like the music just happens to be playing. There's a few little flourishes that mostly add to the tracks, but nothing's wasted. I think he's perfectly filled any silences or potential lulls in the album.
Perfect for Sunday afternoons and early marks from work. my favourites are the opener "Easy Easy" and the upbeat "A Lizard State". Really I am just super amped on this album and would love for it to be the start of a long career and some tours.
The album's on spotify here.
